Mills, Henry R, 12, Civilian death.

In the early part of 1943 Henry (Harry) Mills from Maesglas Grove along with some of his mates went down the Old Road scavenging for any used army stuff, I myself can remember boys in the 1950's going there looking for spent cartridge cases, etc. In an area where roughly the Range is now they came across some canisters surrounded by about 2 and half feet of barbed wire which they easily pushed down with their feet. For some reason a canister was opened and a number of the lads were splashed with a liquid gas or similar and suffered burns which made them run home and get washed down by their families. Harry how ever was the most seriously burned of them all and was taken to the doctors at the shops in Maesglas. The doctor I understand refused to take Harry in his car to hospital and so a an ambulance had to be called. Sadly after being in hospital for a number of days 12 year old Harry died from his injuries.
